Professor Pontiano Kaleebu
Professor Pontiano Kaleebu is the Director of the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS and Deputy Director Uganda Virus Research Institute. He is Founder of the UVRI-IAVI HIV Vaccine Program and its Executive Director 2001- 2010. He is an Honorary Professor London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases and a Visiting Reader, Imperial College, London Division of Investigative Sciences. He is a Fellow of Imperial College London, Faculty of Medicine. He holds a medical degree from Makerere University, Kampala, a Diploma in Immunology and a PhD from the University of London. He was the chair of the African AIDS Vaccine Programme under WHO for many years, and is a board member of the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC) in New York. He served as a board member of the South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative up to 2005. He served as a member of the WHO/UNAIDS HIV vaccine Advisory Committee; served as a Coordinating committee and inaugural Science committee member of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise. He leads the EDCTP East African Networks of Excellence. He has served on committees of a number of international conferences including previous International AIDS Vaccine meetings.
