The Population Council seeks a chemist with experience in analytical method development, cGLP (current good laboratory practices) and cGMP (current good manufacturing practices) guidelines, and formulation manufacturing and analysis to join a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, regulatory affairs specialists, and scientists advancing products to prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. The incumbent will develop/validate analytical methods, formulate microbicide gels, and mentor junior staff. He/she will also be responsible for the day-to-day operation of a cGMP facility that produces products for Phase 1 clinical trials.   

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists in the development of novel microbicide gels by:
- employing HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography), release studies, and rheology to  determine performance/stability profiles of microbicide gels,
- supervising the preparation, analysis, and testing of gels for clinical trials,
- collaborating with team members and external consultants/experts.

2. Contribute to patent and regulatory documents and filings by providing write-ups of analytical methods, gel preparative methods, novel ideas, and stability data.

3. Maintain a productive and safe laboratory work environment in accord with cGLP and cGMP conditions by:
- overseeing the writing of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for cGMP facility in concert with  Council colleagues and contract SOP writer, 
- scheduling work and assignments and managing day-to-day operations of a cGMP facility, and
- supervising the activities of two chemists in addition to supervising and mentoring junior level
 laboratory staff.

4. Assists Population Council in its efforts to publicize research related to the prevention and transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, by publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting work at internal meetings and national/international scientific forums.

5. Help to secure research support from outside agencies by providing accurate and timely input on grant proposals and by submitting supplementary data, as requested.

ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS:   

1.     Ph.D. in chemistry or closely related field with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.

2.     Knowledge of regulatory guidelines and product development.

3.     Experience with grant writing a plus.

4.     Demonstrated ability to work in a team as well as independently.

5.     Solid publication record.

6.     Outstanding written and oral English language and communication skills.

7.     Experience managing/mentoring scientific staff
